EULOGY FOR TOBEY
| I lost a member of my family today. The family that I made, like having a son. Tobey passed away today. He was 13, which is 68 in cat years. In spite of all the chores, accidents, restraint on travel, relationships cut short because of allergies; you know true love has been yours when you would have it all back unconditionally. In 1989 on October 1st, I saw Chappy in a flea market on Staten Island being offered up for adoption. In the process of adopting Chappy, Tobey gave out such a cry that my heart was forever pledged. So, I adopted Tobey, with Chappy, as friends for Tiffany. They were so small when I got them. Chappy had a little mustache like Charlie Chaplin; hence, he became the Chappy Man. Tobey was a black cat on the 1st day of the month when black cats have special magic; so, his name came from ocTOBEr becoming Tobey Tyler. Tobey and Chappy became batman and robin in the house. Tiffany played the villanous cat woman. As tiny little kittens, at bedtime Chappy tried to balance on my forehead and Tobey curled onto my neck. For 13 years, I've occasionally woken up with Tobey's nose pressed against mine--his little head resting on my pillow. Today, before Tobey left, I was tortured with hopes for miracles. I believe that a miracle could be a cure or knowledge that it is time to go. A woman passed with a T-shirt that read North Shore Cancer Center. Tobey's adoption agency was the North Shore Animal League; his diagnosis was cancer; and it had left him skin and bones except in the center under his rib cage where the tumor was the size of a golf ball. I'm certain it was a sign to give him back. Thank you, God, for the time I had. ![]() Rest in Peace, my son, Tobey.
