|  Frank Sinatra was brainwashed by the commies. The U.S. Army knew it, but they also thought he was deprogrammed. However, they didn't know about his wife Janet Leigh. Was she working for the commies? Was she a he?
Wait a minute, you say; Frank Sinatra wasn't married to Janet Leigh.
Sure he was--in the mid-1950's.
What I was describing to you is the loose end in the original 1962 movie The Manchurian Candidate.
 The Russian and Chinese communist governments, in a joint “Pavlovian” project, capture, brainwash and release a band of American soldiers near the end of the Korean War. The released band of brothers, including Sinatra, vouch for the bravery of one snooty, unlikable, rich boy. He wins a medal under false pretenses. Their memories are lies--planted by the communists.
The medal winner is a one-man sleeper cell in our own U.S. government. His purpose is to turn our country over to another communist dupe.
After Sinatra sets in motion the communist plan by vouching for the medal winner, his character seems to break his own programming. But Janet Leigh, his wife, is odd.
 How odd?
Janet Leigh is only seen interacting in the movie with her husband (alla The Sixth Sense?). Janet Leigh speaks in odd phrases and non sequiturs to Sinatra, like a spy prompting for the password. Janet Leigh refers to herself as a descendant of Chinese railroad workers. Her name in the film is Eugenie Rose, which means Red Queen--the playing card that activates the programming of the brainwashed medal winner. The movie ends with Sinatra (Major Marco in the movie) and Eugenie Rose alone together.[1]
How would you tie up that loose end?
This movie played with historical facts and politics. Without an appreciation for American history you would miss that. So, in a sense, if this movie were found in a college course catalog it might look like this:
The Manchurian Candidate, 1962
This movie builds upon the exposure of communists in positions of power and influence within the United States by Senator Joseph McCarthy. Prerequisite: HIST 150.
. In HIST 150, we did both: studied the McCarthy era and watched the movie. With those credentials, the students of American History II were assigned to write sequels using more history to tie up the loose end.
Following is a composite of their sequels. (I took liberties to produce what follows.)
The Sequel to The Manchurian Candidate, 2005
 The joint Pavlovian program to undermine U.S. foreign policy with brainwashed U.S. servicemen/assassins may have been proceeding to the liking of the Russians but was to the disadvantage of the Chinese. The United States would soon be involved in a second war within the Chinese sphere of influence curtailing Chinese expansion. Although a chortling Chinese man, Dr. Yen Lo, is the twisted mastermind of the program, the Kremlin apparently calls the shots.
Our sequel begins three years after the 1960 election going to a president who confronts Soviet expansion. The Soviet and Chinese partnership is beginning to turn competitive. The Soviets go outside the original band of brothers to activate an assassin to eliminate the threat to Soviet power from this young president. Eugenie Rose shows Major Marco a red jack from a deck of playing cards activating his programming to assassinate the president. As a trusted Army officer, Major Marco has no trouble averting suspicion to his presence near the grassy knoll.[2] As in the first movie, Major Marco sprints to the location of the shooter (arriving too late to abort the assassination), where he apprehends a dishonorably discharged Marine, who is said to have defected to Russia in 1959 but was returned by the Soviets in 1962.
 Vice President Johnson assumes the presidency and turns the nation's attention firmly toward Indochina, which does not trouble the Soviets as much as the Chinese. However, Johnson's Great Society is in trouble from a dynamic civil rights leader, who calls attention to Johnson's administration's broken promises. Again, in 1968, Eugenie Rose shows Major Marco the red jack to reprogram him with a hypnotic suggestion to assassinate a Christian clergyman.[3]
 The Chinese object to keeping Johnson in office because he is waging war against them. The Soviets assure the Chinese that they will be sacrificing too to keep Johnson in office. [4] The civil rights movement has trusted associates, who are in fact Soviet operatives. The Soviets point to intelligence reports that President John F. Kennedy and his brother, Attorney General Robert Kennedy had personally warned Reverend Martin Luther King to dissociate himself. Even so, Johnson was needed to block the political ascendancy of Robert Kennedy in the run up to the 1968 election. The Chinese are not assuaged by this explanation, but they cannot overtly defy the orders from the Kremlin.
John F. Kennedy's opponent for the presidency in 1960 was Richard M. Nixon. Nixon had made a career of fighting Soviet communism: first as a Representative on the House Un-American Committee exposing Hollywood intellectuals caught up in Stalin's cult of personality; and continuing as a Senator against threats like Soviet spy Alger Hiss--President Franklin D. Roosevelt's trusted State Department officer at the Yalta Conference and at the creation of the United Nations.[5] The Chinese see an opportunity to throw off the Kremlin's dominance with Nixon.
 Major Marco and Eugenie Rose spoke cryptically in the original movie about Arabic relations. That dangling detail becomes important now. Looking to cover for their duplicity, the Chinese activate their own assassin outside the band of brothers. Palestinian Sirhan B. Sirhan assassinates 1968 presidential candidate Robert Kennedy, claiming afterward that he had no recollection of what he had done.[6] This final volley of assassinations clears the field for the presidency of the unwitting, highly respected, anti-communist, Richard M. Nixon.[7]
President Nixon would withdraw the military from Indochina, end the military draft, counter Soviet expansion, and open up trade with China. The United States had an ally to counterbalance the growing Soviet threat; and China had an ally to protect itself from the Soviets. Still communist, yes; but under the control of the Kremlin, no more. After several setbacks--no plan is perfect--Nixon is their Manchurian Candidate.
The end?
 Not until you realize that the red queen, Eugenie Rose, is really the red jack. Major Marco, who believes he is with a woman, is living a married life with the Chinese man Dr. Yen Lo. It has been the perfect cover for the doctor from the Americans and the Soviets. But it is time for a divorce. Major Marco seemingly takes his own life, leaving behind a confession implicating only the Soviets.[8]
Now, please do not fault us for our poetic license with the facts. I am proud of my class delving into history to gather up information to make their sequels. Instead, take HIST 150 American History II and pat yourself on the back for knowing a little American history too.. . ALLOHISTORY
This is a word for a type of fiction that involves altered historical events--a "what if" story. Other names for this idea are counterfactualism, virtual history, and uchronia, though the most common term is alternative history (alternate history in the US).
The prefix allo- is from Greek allos, “different, other”, as in allegory and allergy. You will find this type of fiction cataloged with scienc fiction. Or you can tune into ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, PBS, NPR, Air America, New York Times, or Washington Post. | Past Editions:
